Deciding to get married is a wonderful, life-changing step! As your Gold Coast celebrants specializing in simple, registry-style ceremonies, we’re here to make the process smooth and meaningful. While the focus is on your love story, there are a few legal requirements we need to navigate together. Don’t worry, it’s usually straightforward!

In Australia, marriage is recognised legally as ‘the union of two people to the exclusion of all others voluntarily entered into for life’. This legal status comes with some responsibilities and steps we need to follow.

Are We Ready? The Age Requirement

  • If you’re both 18 or older, planning your marriage is simple from a legal age perspective.
  • If one of you is 16 or 17, it’s still possible to marry someone over 18, but it requires a bit more – permission from parents/guardians and a special court order. We can discuss this if it applies to you. (No one under 16 can marry in Australia).

The Important Paperwork (Don’t Worry, We’ll Guide You!)
Before the wedding, we’ll need to sight a few original documents:

  • Something proving your date and place of birth (like your birth certificate or Aussie passport. An overseas passport works if you were born abroad). If it’s not in English, you’ll need a certified translation.
  • If either of you has been married before, we’ll need the official document showing that marriage has ended (like a divorce certificate or death certificate).

The ‘Heads-Up’ Form: Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM)
This is the main legal form. You need to give it to us at least one full month before your wedding day (but not more than 18 months ahead). Think of it as giving official notice and a little time for reflection!

  • You can easily download the NOIM form here: [Download PDF: New-notice-of-intended-marriage] (Tip: Save it before you start typing!). It’s also on the government website (www.ag.gov.au).

Our Promise as Your Celebrant:
Choosing the right celebrant is about connection and trust. Beyond crafting a beautiful ceremony, we take our legal responsibilities seriously:

  • We’ll carefully check all your documents and guide you through the legal requirements.
  • On the day, we’ll manage the signing of the official certificates and register with you and your two witnesses (who need to be over 18).
  • After you’ve said “I do!”, we’ll promptly lodge all the necessary paperwork with the authorities (we use the online system for speed!).

We’re here to help make this part easy, so you can focus on the joy of getting married!
